Lajatico is a small hilltop village in the Valdera region, home to just 1,300 residents, stone streets, and views that are difficult to forget. This is where Andrea Bocelli was born and raised. And although his voice has taken him to the world’s greatest stages, Lajatico has always remained home, a place he still returns to often. The village is around a 25-minute drive from Agriturismo Il Gattero, making it perfect for a relaxed evening trip.
For most of the year, Lajatico moves at its own quiet pace. But from late June until mid-September, something extraordinary happens here.
ArtInsolite is an annual contemporary art exhibition that, every year from 30 June onwards, transforms the charming village of Lajatico into an open-air museum. Squares, streets, and buildings are quite literally taken over by art installations, each year built around a different theme, almost like the set of a film. The project has existed since 2010 and has always been closely connected to Teatro del Silenzio, the famous open-air amphitheatre created by Andrea Bocelli. Its creator and artistic director is Alberto Bartalini, who personally selects the artists every year. Each artwork is deliberately placed somewhere “unexpected”, which is exactly where the name Insolite comes from: unusual, surprising. The goal isn’t simply to display art, but to create a dialogue with the space itself and with the people who live and work there every day.
Over the years, the exhibition has featured internationally renowned contemporary artists including Igor Mitoraj, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mario Ceroli, Alessandro Mendini, Marco Lodola, Manolo Valdés, and Pablo Atchugarry.
The installations can be visited from 30 June to 15 September, every day from 10:00 AM until midnight. Entry is completely free. You’ll be in Lajatico in September — which happens to coincide perfectly with the final days of the exhibition. It’s actually the ideal moment to visit: the village is still filled with installations, but the summer crowds from July have long disappeared.
The full ArtInsolite 2026 programme, including the artists and annual theme, will be announced in June 2026 on the official website. You can also follow updates here: 👉teatrodelsilenzio.it 👉facebook.com/artinsolitelajatico
There’s no single route and no tickets to buy. You simply arrive in Lajatico and start wandering. The installations are everywhere: in piazzas, on building walls, tucked into alleyways, beside the church, even painted across shop shutters. Some works are temporary and change every year. But others have become permanent parts of the village itself.
Together — David Pompili
A mural on Via Garibaldi, right beside the Palazzo Comunale. One of the most recognisable permanent pieces in Lajatico, left behind as a lasting mark of Pompili’s long collaboration with ArtInsolite.
Photographs & Murals on Shop Shutters
Here, even closed shops become canvases. Some of these works come from previous editions of the festival and still remain in place — simply because nobody has the heart to remove them.
SCART Installations
Every year, the artistic project by Gruppo Hera returns to the village. SCART is an initiative that has spent more than 14 years transforming industrial waste into works of art, often in collaboration with students from the Fine Arts Academies of Florence, Carrara, Bologna, and Ravenna. Look for their pieces throughout the streets and public spaces.
A Few Practical Tips
When should you go? In the evening. Many installations light up and feel completely different after dark. The exhibition stays open until midnight, making it the perfect after-dinner activity.
How much time do you need? About an hour for a relaxed walk with a drink in hand. Two hours if you want to explore every little corner properly.
Is there a map? Yes, the official installation map is available at the Palazzo Comunale on the main square. Definitely worth picking up at the start of your visit.
